    clean install of win 98se on a laptop

    OK here is the problem I have compaq armada 1700 laptop.I have just replace the drive in it from another laptop, I tried to instal win98 it went through part of the setup ,but when it got to the formatting it got hangup at 11 percent and it would not move, but then install windows XP on it and it took, so is it a bad drive,or something software related.Any help will greatly appreciated.

      most like there are hardware on the compaq that win98 doesnt have drivers and support for it (during the install)
      try to copy the copy the win98 folder from the cdrom to the harddisk.
      you can use a win98 bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com. You can create a bootable diskette with a cdrom option, boot with the cdrom option.
      format the disk with :
      format c:/s
      then copy the c:\win98 folder to the harddisk:
      c:
      md win98
      cd win98
      e: (assuming that e is the cdrom
      cd win98
      copy *.* c:
      the reboot (without the diskkete, you should be able to arrrive at the command prompt.
      then
      cd win98
      setup

      this will work unless it’s the motherboard or other components that the setup can not find, in most cases it will finish and you can download the rest of the drivers from the web.

      Try formating the drive with fdisk from the win98 startup disk.

      Then do the install.

      What size drive.
