Clean Install Win2K Server

By nurhuda77 ·
I have an existing win2k server. When I do a 'Clean Install', it will delete and replace the C:\Winnt directory with the new windows installation. Qn: Will the windows registry be cleared as well? ie will i get a clean registry?

Generaly when you do a re-install, you are prompted to keet an existing configuration on your machine and/or your registry settings or to erase it. Of course you can always tell the setup program to erase the current settings and start from scratch. The best thing on these occasions is to do the process al over again, including re-partition your drive. There are a bunch of tools to speed up the process, specially for Win2000, which is such time-consuming OS to install. i.e. Partition Magic.

However what I would suggest you do is whatever you decide to do, whether you go for a total-fresh install or just replace your registry setting, do a clone/ghost of your drive after you completed the installation. Next time it happens, it would only take no more than 5 minutes to have your OS back again.

Should consider it,......

The registry is a couple of files that exist in the winnt folder, so deleting all files in the winnt folder will also delete the registry.
Clean installs are fun, because you still get fragments of programs left in their install directories but wont run due to missing files. It is better to backup what data you have, format the drive and do a proper "clean" install.
