Clean OS Install on Compaq Presario

By gmichaels ·
I may need to wipe a hard drive on a newer Compaq Presario and resinstall the OS. Its been a while since I worked on a Compaq. I seem to recall they always do things a bit different and proprietary. What "gotchas" should I be aware of? Do I need to follow a different procedure or should this be a standard format/OS install process?

Mainly the only gotcha are in the drivers - goto driversguide.com as the member boards
are usually teeming with drivers for Compaq (HPs)

If you have the restore cds for the compaq then it's really very simple. I recommend you delete the partitions that compaq sometimes makes and form 1 partition, then format the drive. Then boot to the restore cds and you're good to go. Drivers for all your hardware are easy to find at driverguide.com, but it's even better to go to hp.com and get them from the source.

A restore CD should have shipped with the 'puter. It would be red with Compaq emblazoned on it. It contains the O/S that was originally shipped with your system. You can try booting from the CD, Booting from the Emergency Start-up Diskette and running setup, (You did make a boot-disk didn't you?), Or you can explore the cd and run the setup program. Compaq does have a set of diagnstic tools loaded to a folder on the disk for use in testing the system. If you fdisk you will wipe ut the Compaq folder and tools. course if it's W-anything you'll have to Scandisk first. Should be SOP other wise.
