Clean Sweep won't undo, and other issues

By EStreetJerseyGirl ·
I have Windows XP installed on my computer (a Dell Inspiron). For some reason, a .dll file is missing on it and I can't get online with MSN at all, and AOL will connect, but in the process of connecting, I get the error: "network assistance requested." When I get onto AOL, the keywords won't work. When I try to click on the blue IE "e," the window just blinks and goes away.

Now, here's the bad part ... I went to uninstall a program that was giving me problems, and accidentally chose "Clean Sweep" and walked away for a few minutes, not realizing. When I came back, 1504 files ended up being deleted. I used the "undo" option, but all the files weren't restored. I tried doing a System Restore, but the computer won't even recognize any System Restore dates or times.

My question: besides for reinstalling XP totally, is there ANY way to fix this problem?

Wow. It probably deleted the System Restore points, so they are gone. I guess you could get an undelete program and try to undelete them, but that might not fully work.
There are ways to pull an older copy of the Registry, import it, then use that as a starting point for System Restore, but if the Restore points are gone, then it is a moot point.
My suggestion is that, if you can't do a Repair from the XP cd, that you just backup your XP licence file (WPA.dbl and WPA.bak if it exists), reinstall XP, then restore the licence files so you don't need to go through the whole Activation thing.

Thanx ... it was actually my fiance's computer that it happened to, and he got pissed off with the whole situation and just reinstalled XP and used his backups, reinstalled a few programs, like Easy CD Creator .... But I never knew about the license file thing - thanx for that tip!!
