Cleaning up Windows95 without Uninstall

By jimh76_99 ·
Windows95 (upgrade version) crashed badly. When reinstalled I discovered remnants of IE 3.02 and 5.0. Can't install either one. Uninstall won't work. What files and registry/ini entries do I need to remove manually?
Also, drivespace is there, and says it won't andle drives over 500MB. I need ver 3. When trying to install it says a later version is already there. How do I get rid of the existing one?

I realise you want to do this without uninstalling, but I think you're going to end up doing a lot more work, with an uncertain outcome. I'd suggest backing up your docs onto floppies and formatting.

Just my 2 cents' worth. Good luck.

Got it mostly fixed with first suggestion. I know clean install is best, but that was not a good choice in this situation.

I agree with answer 2. Fdisk, format and re-install. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the techrepublic members are here to answer questions and offer advice. Even if you were successful in your patching up of a crashed system, I am sure it will take you a lot more time, and eventually some missed remedy will cause you other problems. There is no substitute for a clean install. You really will be doing yourself a favor by starting clean. You have some major conflicts in your problem description, and I doubt if you are going to fix them.

I know clean install will fix everything, but it was not a very desirable option in this situation. Everthing except the drivespace problem seems to be fixed.
