Click Start process too slow in Windows XP

By polarity64 ·
I have Toshiba laptop (Tecra) with Windows XP. Whenever, I try to click on 'Start' button, the menu takes 5/10 secs to appear. This is very frustrating behavior. Can anyone help pls.

Thanks

How old is the installation of XP? Are you running sp2? Have you done any recent updates, added/removed any apps or hardware?

What are the hardware specs on the system?

ctrl+alt+delete to view task manager.
You can view what processes are running, view cpu utilization, etc.

You probably have a lot of cool colorful icons in the lower right corner where the time is displayed.

When you get the start menu to come up, go to RUN and type MSCONFIG and go to the startup tab. disable everything, reboot and see how it does. If

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

This is a link that great for identifying all the things in your startup in msconfig.

Also try some routine maintenance things like disk cleanup, defragmentor, scandisk and also scan for viruses and spyware.

I recomend spybot for finding spyware.

As another post said:

Do this and tell us:
How many processes are running?
and
How much memory (PF Usage) are you using?
and
How much memory shows available?

Also, it is important that you have SP2 installed and updated. Bill Gates will do this for free...

Here's a good one I use because the delay annoys me: When using the start menu there is a delay between different tiers of the menu. By changing the delay value to zero you can speed up the display. This will allow the different tiers to appear instantly.

1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
3. Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.
4. Right on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to 0
6. Reboot your computer.

Noticed a differece but of other type

There is no improvement in the delay though i noticed that the previously the start menu would not change the shape during that delay but this time the start button shape changed as 'pressed button". Makes any sense?

Disable all the fancy/pretty junk XP does when you click on icons start button etc...by

-Right click on My Computer,
-Properties,
-Advanced tab
-In Performance section "Settings"
-"Adjust for best performance"
-OK

See if that speeds things up
