Client can't find DHCP.

By eric.brown ·
Problem at a customer we support:
Have an NT4 workstation that operates properly on the network when assigned a static IP address.
When switched to DHCP, it can't find the DHCP server. There is a Proxy client installed on the local PC, if it matters. Of course, nothing's changed on this machine!

What SP level? I have needed to reapply SP6a after changing NIC's in the past.

Thanks, but already did that. I should have included that info.

Things to try if you haven't already - first make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled and make sure IPX is NOT installed (remove it if so); if that's all OK, and the problem still exists, check TCP/IP connectivity (ping loopback, then server by nameand IP), if pinging fails, then remove and reinstall TCP/IP; if that doesn't work, try removing and reinstalling the NIC drivers AND TCP/IP - might as well check for updated drivers while you're at it and install the latest ones. Hope this helps!

Is there a DHCP server on the clients subnet? If not is your router configured to forward bootP requests?

If there is a DHCP server on the local subnet make sure BootP forwarding is disabled on your router. Sometimes when 2 devices (Local DHCP server and your Router forwarding requests, in this case)listen for requests the faster will win. If its the router that wins, there is no server to send the request to.
