clients cannot logon

By BAZZTECH ·
I am stumped by this one. I have a client with a small network 2 clients Win98 and one server NT4.0. All of a sudden neither of the clients can logon no matter what user name they try. All user have no passwords and none of the accounts have been locked out. I tried creating a new user and that doesnt work either. Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to check that the clients can see the server.

Try to ping the server from one of the win98 clients. If you don't get a response you know you have a network issue.

What response do you get when you try and login?

Check all cables, I suspect that server's NIC is either malfunction or lose cable or if your have a hub someone may have switch the Uplink/Downlink. Check event logs to see if anything reports there.
Check server can see workstations.

Make sure that the netlogon service on the server is running. If it was stopped the server wouldn't authenticate anything. Can you log on as those users onto the server? Make sure the logon rights are enabled appropriately in user manager.

OK so I've tried all those suggestions and still nothing. I have even reapplied the service pack and still no go. I am really stumped, because the communication is there. I can ping both ways with good results but the clients just cannot logon. Any help would be much appreciated. TIA

On the NT server open up User Manager for Domains. Click on Policies and select User Rights. Make sure that in the box the Everyone group is there and that they have the right to Access this Computer from the Network.

What kind of error message or behavior do you get when the clients can't log on to the server? This info would be very helpful. First make sure that the Server, Workstation, Netlogon and Browser services are running on the server. If there's any problem with any of these, there should be error messages in the server's System or Application event log. You can then use this info to troubleshoot further. Some additional questions: When logged onto the workstation, can you see the network? Does Network Neighborhood show the server and the computers attached to it? If so, what happens when you try to manually browse to a shared folder on the server? Can you map a drive to a shared resource on the server? Hope this helps!
