Clients lose connection with DC

By qmd61 ·
I have 1 DC running SBS Windows 2000 Server and 32 client computers. Yesterday, 3 Windows 98 client computers and 2 XP clients? computers lose their connection with Server.

The only way that I seem to be able to get around it is by uninstall and reinstall WINS server, this fix the problem: all 98 and XP machine work as normal.
But it works for about 10 hours and problem come back again. I have to do the same thing again and again to fix the problem when it comes back. The weird thing is WinXP was effected by WINS too.

I did scanned for virus; No error in event viewer, DHCP, DNS and WINS is install on the same Server and function, all client could ping Server OK. I can browse all client PC from Server.

Any idea? Would you please helping me to fix this problem.

Is this DC the only DC on your network? Just by the time delay of 10 hours would make me guess that something is being replicated from somewhere that doesnt have those computers in question in its database.

This is only DC on the network. Name Resolution is a main problem in this situation. I been help by a friend: Create an LMHOSTS file for both Win98 and Win XP pointing to this DC. This solve the problem. I did not believe that Windows XP still using WINS but it is. Thanks for your quick anwser.

First thing, I would check to make sure that you had plenty of SBS licenses to cover your clients. XP Pro comes with it's own license, but Win98 you may need to purchase a license for.

WinXP doesn't use WINS, only WinME and lower, so it sounds like you may have a DNS issue, or a time synch issue as well. You might try adding a net time //servername /set /y entry into the SBSLOGIN.bat to test for time issues.
