Clients scripts won't exe in domain

By wburdine ·
Background: NT4 server SP6a w/ 25CAL; 10 2k workstations...all ip & subnet info correct.
QUESTION:
I find that when several systems log in and out of the network in rapid succession (say 5 do it in 10-20min of each other) then the client login script does not execute. When attempting to access \\server\netlogon I get the message '\\server\netlogon is not accessible', 'No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because they are already as many connections as the computer can accept.'
Things checked...physical connections..okay, network settings..okay, tried shutting down the system completely for 5min...problem still exists.
I think it has to do with the server not releasing the CAL's correctly. Thanks in advance

There is a quick way to find out if licensing service is the culprit. Go to the Services applet in the Control Panel, find the Licensing Service and disable it. If this clears up the occurrence of the error and the running of logon scripts, great.

If your NT license manager is only keeping up with 25 CALs, even if on multiple products, you should be able to manage keeping up with that without the NT License Manager. Leave it disabled! It has only caused me trouble in the past.

Good luck.

Open your License Manager and look to see if all of your licenses are in use and if the same system is eating multiple licenses. Had similar problem and eventually had to turn the thing off (haven't found a NT network where the License Manager worksgood).

Hmmm - sorry to disagree with the other answers, but I've never seen a straight vanilla NT server prevent someone from logging on because of License Manager. True, License Manager will get messed up and tell you that you have exceeded your licensesbecause it doesn't properly purge old license assignments, but this does NOT prevent someone from logging on - it just leaves an event in the Event Log. So, my guess is that you must be using either a not-for-resale demo copy with a license limit, or Small Bus. BackOffice Server - these are the only situations in which logons will actually be prevented because of licensing. That said, since you only have 10 workstations connected you should not be running out of NT licenses anyway. My guess is that it is perhaps Exchange that is causing the problem. Exchange has been known to cause licensing problems of this sort in limited-license systems like SBS, because a single user may end up being logged onto Exchange 2 or 3 times. This was a problem in earlier versions of SBS, particularly 4.0 and even I think in 4.5. Another question is - why are people logging of and on in such rapid sequence? This really shouldn't be done under normal operating circumstances. However, I would look into the Exchange licensing issues if you are in fact using SBS. Hope this helps!

Not running Exchange....or a small "Back Office Server"
its a Std NT4.0 Server with sp6...
This problem pops up every once in a while and the only solution that seems to work is to log off everyone from the network, then shut down the server....reboot and every thing is fine till the next time it does it....I'm trying to find the next time preventative measure.

Take another look at License Manager - are you using Per Server instead of Per Seat licensing? If so, try changing to Per Seat - this may solve the problem. You could also try wiping out the License Manager files completely - the files could be corrupted. To do this, stop the License service, then in the %systemroot%\system32 folder, delete the Cpl.cfg file, and in systemroot%\system32\Lls, delete the Llsuser.lls and Llsmap.lls files, then restart the License service and re-enter your licensing info. Another possibility is that there is a shared resource on the server that is set up to limit the no. of users that can connect to it at one time. Check your shared folder settings - in properties of folder on the sharing tab there is a User limit setting which can be set to a certain number of users, or to "maximum" - be sure they are all set to "maximum". Hope this helps!
