Clitches with XP

By dean-marcel ·
OK people, I have a prob that is confusing me.

I have a PC with a few clitches with Win XP Home.

It's a brand new AMD xp Athlon 2GHz with a Jetway motherboard and DDR RAM (512), GeForce IV graphics.
The Prob (1): Windows will not put the PC into any 'Power Save' modes except screen saver. No monitor off, hard drive off or system stand by, I have checked both windows settings and CMOS. On occasions (but not always) it will crash (blue screen of death) with an error 'driver not responding'???? (can get correct error code if required)

Prob (2): Norton System Works 2002 would not install correctly with error 'User does not have access to the Hot_Key log' with regard to login administraction. There is only one login on the PC (owner) but has no password (login screen skipped on boot up) which is set to admin, why???

Please help?

Updating the graphics driver is a good idea, I have used the original disc and not thought of updates.
I still can't work out why XP is telling me I have no access to the REG when the login is set to admin? Can you help with this one??? (I will give ya the graphics one if it works)

Cheers Dean

After further investigation, the system will go into standby if I set it to 1min, if set to 20mins it will not perform the task.

The unit in question has been performing windows updates and is networked (LAN) to another PC which shares this ones Internet and Printer only.

have you installed norton before?or clean install?
If u have installed before and the install is corrupt you may have to boot to safemode and runregedit to get rid of norton(pain in the @$$)go to edit and find Norton and remove each instance of norton from ur reg it's alot of work but it is the only way i know of how to get rid of it and reinstall the software.there is programs like reg cleaner but thats up to u.

Best of luck

This was the first time that any Symantic product was installed on this PC, I have tried installing the same CD on a very similar PC and all went ok.
