      We need more information.

      What make of PC ?
      What have you tried?
Does your Motherboard have a diagnostics program ?
Is the system and old one or a new one ?
Did it suddenly just start happening ?
      What has changed?

Try using the default settings for your bios.
Double check that the jumpers are correct.
Remove as much hardware as you can, and test with the bare minimum. If this doesn’t work please give as much info as possible.

If you’ve already tried replacing the CMOS battery, the only other solution I know is to replace the motherboard.

It is possible, but not likely, that some other hardware component is causing the problem but most commonly it’s just leaky CMOS memory on the motherboard.

If you have a jumper to clear the CMOS settings, try removing and reseating the jumper. There may be some corrosion on the pins.

I’ve come across a couple of these. When changing the CMOS battery doesn’t work, we always end up having to replace the motherboard. For some reason your CMOS is corrupt or just too old. It could be a manufacturing problem that they didn’t detectat the factory. Sorry I couldn’t give you better news.

      Good luck!

Try flashing the bios to a new updated version. You can usually find updates on the manufacturers web page. Sorry i couldn’t help anymore. I need more info.

I ran into the same problem this week with a HP Pavilion 6635 running NT 4.0. My company bought 2 identical machines and one worked fine with NT and the other one came up with a cmos error. I tried everything I could come up with, service packs, tech support, comparing the the settings between the 2 machines, but it didn’t help. I finally had to take the offending machine back, after the system “lost” the OS. If taking it back is an option, do it quick! Hope this helps.

First, you need to remove all cards except for video. Use “Default Settings” for BIOS.
If it is still erratic, I would flash [upgrade] the BIOS. Make sure you can document the BIOS upgrade from the mainboard manufacturer first. Generally, I have found that the BIOS flash will cure almost every time.

If there is a screw through the motherboard near the CMOS battery, make sure it has good rubber washers sealing it. A slight short from metal to metal contact can leech off enough power, grounding the battery into the case so that it kills it.

One option I didn’t see mentioned is trying an additional battery. Most motherboards have a set of pins into which you can plug and external battery. I’ve seen replacment batteries of the type used for cmos do this in other devices as well – such ascameras and watches not working consistantly ofter bettery replacement.

If you have not added any new hardware it may be a memory error try changing memory, if more than one bank and its more than a 486 remove one at a time to see if the error stops. You could try a bios update or replace bios chip.

Have you checked your motherboard BIOS settings? You may have configured them wrongly and may have caused a system conflict. If you are not sure of your settings, just set them back to default settings by loading the defaults. You can try to update your BIOS files by downloading one from the homepage of your motherboard maker, then flash your BIOS and see what happens. If that fails, try replacing the BIOS chip with another one, but this is usually done as a last option.
