Coexistence of Netware 4.1 & W2K Server

By rfhouck ·
I have just setup a Windows 2000 Server and want to add it to a network that has a single Netware 4.1 server, 4 hubs, and 25 users. Can I just plug it into one of the hubs and both protocols will be available to the client workstations, if Netware and Microsoft clients are installed on the workstations? Do I need to do anything special? I merely want the client workstations to have access to both servers to run applications that are on the servers.

Coexistence of Netware 4.1 & W2K Server

I have been working in a Netware 4.12 and Windows 2000 lan for some time now (almost 2 years). If you load the clients and login to each server you should have no trouble at all. Additionally, there are single sign on products, enhancements (like Synchronicity) to assist with user accounts, passwords etc and NDS for NT. They are well worth looking at as they'll save you a lot of administrative hassle.

Good luck!

You only need a single sign on tool if the users have different passwords for the different servers - the Netware client will log you into a Windows domain if they are the same.

If you are planning to run the two concurrently, then there shouldn't be any problems. In fact it's even possible to intergrate the directory services with each other (using later versions of Netware), but if you are planning a gradual migration away from Netware, avoid the Client Services for Netware tool from Microsoft - it's an unreliable piece of junk that creates bizarre problems. Swap your users over all at once if possible.

You will only need to install TCP/IP on the workstations. If you have the latest Novell client all should work OK
