Is there any way to have all cells that have a yellow background display the word incomplete and all cells not with a yellow background display the word complete.

I am assuming this is for MS Excel. You could write a macro to check the formatting of a cell and if its yellow set the text of the cell to incomplete. Could you provide any more details on the problem do the cells you want to check remain in the same position i.e. the cell is always in A2 or whereever.

Chip Pearson has a good article on Excel and colors:

Thinking outside the box, I think the simplest way is to use Format...Conditional Format... to set the cell color to yellow if the text is "incomplete" and white otherwise. You could also use Data...Validation... to restrict the text entries in thecell to "complete" and "incomplete".
