COM object question

Can COM objects embedded in a web page access the computer's innards such as file directory or a port?

In theory, yes, depends a lot on what you mean by embedded. Components hosted on the server have access to the server's "innards." At one time, those downloaded as part of a page could access resources on the local machine, but this may have changedsince that represents a bit of a security hole -- too easy to inadvertantly run malicious code that way.
