COM Port busied out in XP?

Got something weird here… We’re running a WAN with Win2K servers and XP workstations. Since we have a T-1 connection to Net, we only have one workstation with a modem. Needed to share that modem with another workstation for a periodic dial-up dataaccess to a bank. When I created shared Internet connection, this of course fouled up the IP address on the internal network, so I deleted it. This seems to have busied out COM1 (even though the internal modem is on COM3) and now the Palm V can’t find the port to sync. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the COM port AND the Palm 4.0.1 Desktop software, to no avail. Can’t seem to find anything on MS TechNet (doesn’t mean there isn’t anything, only that I can’t FIND it!) Since the problem seems to live on after hard boot, I’m assuming something written in the registry, but don’t know what to look for?

Anybody out there have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

Forgot to mention, Device Manager reports no problems or conflicts in either the IRQs or Resources and the modem on COM3 works just fine…

Event Manager reports “The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the subscriber partition:{41E90F3E-56C1-4633-81C3-6E8BAC8BDD70}!new:{6295DF2D-35EE-11D1-8707-00C04FD93327}. CoGetObject returned HRESULT 8000401A.”

      Hi
COM1 and COM3 share the same IRQ4. This can be a problem if you want to use at the same time two devices (or application) conected to COM1 and COM3. Move one device to COM2 or COM4.
      Hope this help you

Also a good practice is to disable in BIOS the port used for modem.

Thanks for your response. The modem is set at IRQ 22 by XP. However, I tried moving the modem to COM4 (since we’re not using COM2), but there were no changes. Neither COM3 or COM4 are set in BIOS, but only in the OS. Resources are allocated as follows, with no devices reporting conflicts:
        Modem IRQ 22 (still) I/O DF00-DF3F COM4
        COM1 IRQ 04 I/O 03F8-03FF

        Any other ideas?

I gave up and reinstalled the operating system, but still had the problem. Tested the com ports with a dos disk and serial mouse–no problem, so it had to be software. Finally put in another workstation with the same modem. Everything a-ok with newmachine and old works fine without the modem!

You give the description of the eroor message. What are the Event ID and Source of the error message? Have you tried searching the MS KnowledgeBase on that Event ID?

Ok, this is now my THIRD try to reply to this answer!

KB had nothing to offer. The problem seemed fine when I replied to number 2, then recurred with new workstation! Finally, after 6 calls to Palm tech support, they admitted that the fault was probably with the handheld which has now been replaced.
