you've asked a question where you'll get a 1,000 different opinions on what is the best.

I build my own, and the company that I work for. For my personal computer, I use MSI mainboards, AMD processors, Kingston DDR memory, Maxton HDD's, Plextor CD-RW Drives, Antec/Chieftech SX-1040 server cases, Enermax Power supplies, Creative Audigy Sound Card,[ok, I also use Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound on another home computer] Standard old PCI NIC, I use NVidia 128MB GF 4 AGP cards [new FX card is coming out by NVidia soon so I would wait to buy a Vid card]. I use a generic DVD player, and haven't bought a DVD writer yet because the prices keep dropping every other week . This computer has been up and running now for about 2 years with nary a prob in hardware [software is another story but then those problems were my own fault]

As I said, you'll get 1000's of different "what's best". I use what I use because [through trial and error] I'm familiar with the equipment, have not experienced any minor or major problems [quality, configuration, usage or otherwise]with it.

note: never had a "blue screen of death" critical error message. Now, I have had BSD's using Intel processors and Intel mainboards with Intel chipsets on a Windows platform, But with AMD processors, VIA chipsets, on a Windows platform, Not a single one, nadda!!! Thats using W98SE,WME,and W2KPro.[and use Norton Systemworks for clean up very regularly and use RegCleaner for Registry clean up regularly]. Intel, I dunno. Great advertising but stability and compatibility with a Windows platform, I've seen more problems with Intel setups and Windows than AMD/VIA and Windows. Just my take on it.

ok, Well specifics since Chas and Optazg has given them. I use a MSI K3T Ultra ARU mainboard. AMD XP 1800 CPU. I have 2 GB Kingston DDR memory,[2ea 1GB sticks] Gainward/NVidia Quadro 4 XGL 128 MB graphics card [this is a workstation graphics card for high end graphics design] Creative Labs Soundblaster Gamer,[for listening to music really],2ea 120GB Maxtor Hard Drives {RAID striped]. Plextor 24X10X40 CD-RW drive,[ya know, take me about a minute to burn a 500MB disk so why do I need something that saves me maybe 20 to 30 secs on burn time] generic 16X DVD Drive,[for watching movies when I'm goofing off] Enermax 450 watt power supply with dual fans, I'm running 3ea Soyo 80X80mm 2500prm 35cfm fans.[1 intake 2 exhaust]. I pack all this into a Antec SX1040 Server case and run Windows 2000 Pro. I run programs on it like 3D Studio Max,Infusion,Character, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash, [with nary a problem running high end, animatedcharacter graphics]. . I also have another that runs a Athlon 1.4 ghz on a MSI K7T266 Pro RU mainboard, 512 DDR memory 20GB Quantum Fireball AS HDD, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600 128MB

almost forgot the MSI K3T Ultra runs the 333 mhz [PC 2700]DDR memory. The K7T 266 Pro runs the 266 Mhz[ PC2100] memory. Both just amazingly fast, compared to PC-133 Sdrams. I also have two other systems here comparable to the 1.4 Ghz Athlon that areservers [I use a 16 MB AGP graphics card in both servers [generic cards] each server has 30 GB Quantum AS HDD's using the Promise RAID-[mirrored], no sound on either one[why does a server need sound???] and one plain ole workstation running the 1.0 ghz Duron processor with 512 MB PC-133 memory, a 30GB Quantum HDD, Geforce 3 Ti200 64 MB graphcis card, no sound card.[The Geforce 3 Ti200 card in the workstation is overkill but it beats the old 16 MB Voodoo 3 3500 card so I stuck it in there[still have that voodoo card somewhere]again in a Antec SX 1040 server case with those Soyo fans. So there you have it.

Integrated audio and video are of no use, make sure your motherboard comes with plenty of pci slots and now-a-days an 8x-agp slot. The faster the processor the better though little gain will be seen as the speeds go up. The DDR or RD-ram are greatoptions speed wise, 512meg should be the minimum, 1 gig preferrable, Sound Blaster Audigy for a sound card brings the most common support for gaming, and nvidia video 4600/4400/4200 are all excellent, I went with an ATI 9000 pro and if you have money to burn the 4600 nvidia is their current high end and the 9700 ATI is the other. All are excellent and should give you little problems if any, ati is more known for tv dvd quality, nvidia for gaming quality so weigh it as you will. The 9000 pro excedded the specs for throughput of my pc 133- 266 fsb system but still works and looks great.
I would almost say 80 gig may be to small if you're looking into dvd burning, maybe 2 80 gig drives?
Have Fun!

I advise against integrated anything!

Integrated video and audio use CPU cycles in place of their own processor / controller ICs.
If you want good sound and graphics, use plug-in cards.
As a general rule, the more expensive the card, the betterthe performance.
Figure $50 or so for a 'music' quality sound card.

Unless you are into very graphic intensive games, a $100 or so video card will do the job fine.

As to Integrated NIC and Modems, these devices fail often.
Would you rather replace a $15 card, or a $100 motherboard?

Fans, Use as many as needed to keep things cool.
I have good quality CPU fans, 1 or 2 case fans, fans on Video Processor heat sinks.
The power supplies I use have dual fans.
Don't buy a cheap CPU fan.
I recommend DDR RAM.
Switching from RDRAM to DDR RAM is part of how Intel was finally able to match AMDs benchtest performance numbers.
There is no sense buying RAM that is faster than what your motherboard supports.

Power Supply; 400 Watts MINIMUM!

I am now using almost only ASUS and ABIT Socket A motherboards.
The combination of performance and value is what keeps me using them.

Chas
