Combining two Win 2k Networks

By dzone ·
Hello,

I have a situation here at the Detroit Zoo. We have to separate Win 2k networks. Next month both networks will be linked via switch link ups. We want both networks to be able to see each other. Here's the problem, both networks use their own DHCP servers, so that mean separate IP address nets. I don't want to kill one of the DHCP severs because two many processes depend on one of the servers. How can I make it where both Networks can see each other?

Combining two Win 2k Networks

Ok, since your network is one IP segment (192.168.10.0/24) and the other Win2k network is a different IP segment (192.168.11.0/24) then any DHCP problems are non-existent.
YOu will need to have a router route traffic from one IP segment to the other. So, on this router, do NOT allow it to forward BOOTP packets. You see, DHCP packets are BOOTP. If your router blocks BOOTP, then a DHCP requests from a machine on your network will NOT be answered by their DHCP server.

Now, once your router is set up (or whatever device is doing the routing for you, like a Win2K server with RRAS installed) and the BOOTP packets are blocked, and you can successfully PING from your network to theirs, then you can set up a Trust between your two Windows networks. After that, your clients could see their clients; their clients could access shared folders and shared printers on your network and vica versa.

Just make sure your routing is in place and functional. Once that is done, the rest is easy.

hope this helps

DHCP is a broadcast. Routers drop broadcast packets. Therefore, I wouldn't worry about any special consideration to BOOTP packets.
