Communicate between 2 PC's

By mheuvel ·
What is the best way to communicate between 2 PC's, not using the paralel port option at 9600 bps. Speed needs to be higher, not using the LAN but a port to port option.

If you don't have network cards in your PCs you could use a version of Laplink. This enables a serial connection between the PCs via the COM ports.

Personally my choice would to buy 2 100BaseTx NICs for your PCs plus 1 cross cable - it's much cheaper and more effective.

Simply install the cards, set an IP address on each PC within the same subnet and stick a CAT5 cross cable between the ports. You will get a transfer rate between the 2 PCs of 100Mbps.

9600bps is specific for serial ports. Parallel ports speed is higher. If is an acceptable options you can move an HDD from one computer to the other. I don't try an USB connections. See this discusion:

The next fastest below a LAN would be a fire-wire, or USB link.

The USB transfer cable costs around $20.

You don't need a LAN to network 2 PCs.
Just install the NICs, and run a crossover cable between the 2.

There is one other 10MHz option, Phone Line Networking.
