Communication Between Computers

By Peter J ·
The answer to this one is probably very obvious.

Ten workstations networked together, using Windows ME and Office 2000. They are in different locations within a building. How can a message from one computer be sent to another so that it can be accessed when that computer is logged in. The manager wants to send messages to staff who are away for a few days at a time so that they can see the messages when they return.

If possible would prefer not to use internet but if necessary so be it.
There are probably many innovative solutions to this one.

There are probably a bunch of ways to accomplish the manager's objectives, depending on how elegant it needs to be versus cost.

The best longterm solution would be a mailserver (either on your network or outsourced) but a workable solution could be as simple as creating a set of folders on one of the workstations. Each user would have a folder and any messages would be placed in that folder for the user to retrieve when they next came in the office. You could even write a logon script to copy those messages to somewhere they would have to deal with them.

On the other hand, some of the Web-based collaboration services might be cost-effective with this number of users.

Personally, I think the mailserver would soon prove it's worthby not only facilitating communications when people are out of the office but also when they are in.

Paul, thanks for your answer. I have now found the solution to the problem in the form of a freeware program entitled "Network Email(TM)" by Ivory Tower Software.
