Has everyone seen that recent GM commercial where commuters stare enviously out of a mass transit train as a new GM car speeds past, driver smiling? The add claimed that by using a certain credit card, members would earn points toward a new car. Well, I wont even talk about how stupid one must be to attempt to purchase a new car by running up a credit card account. But anyone who lives in a populated area (such as the SF bay area) would quickly recognize the absolute absurdity of this commercial. Anytime between the hours of 5AM to 10PM it would be the car drivers that would be staring enviously out thier window at the train as it speeds past. How about those SUV commercials they show during football games, of people driving through the mountains having a great time. Who does that on a daily basis? Most of the time I see them parked on the I880 freeway on the way to San Jose. PDAs, cell phones, fancy pagers, (and at $>2.00/gallon)SUVs, who needs em. I just want to be able to (afford to) live within a reasonable distance of my place of employment. To make it worse companies are still building in these crowded areas (new Cisco facility in South San Jose for one). Yes, its true, we are not all silicon valley Internet entrepreneurs or senior executives living off venture capital and enormous bonuses. Couldnt we learn to manage our lives and our society better? Where are our priorities?
