Compaq Deskpro 4000 5166MMX NIC

By VCHD_IT ·
I have four of the above computers that I need to restore and get ready to put back into use. I have use the Compaq Bootable Restore CD to restore the harddrive and have install Windows 95.

When I boot up Win95 for the first time the computer does not recognize the presence of the embedded NIC. I have download and installed several drivers but cannot get the NIC to work. I keep getting, in properties, "Device Failure: Try changing the driver for this device. If that doesn't work, see your hardware documentation. " I've run into this problem with two of the above computers. No lights are showing at the connection behind the computer.

I have installed a 3Com 905-TX network card. Loaded drivers and still get the same message. The lights are on at the NIC.

Any suggestions.

Have you downloaded the drivers form HP?

While I did not see it listed there, I would first install the chip-set PCI driver.

If it is an Intel chip-set, you may need to go into the archives in the developer section of Intel.com to find a driver for an older chip-set.

If your recover cd had the diag partition go into there and reset the defaults. If that dosen't work you may have to play with the IRQ for the nic as it may have a conflict.
