Compaq Presario 4706 - Modem upgrade

By dholoo ·
I have a Compaq presario 4706 originally WIN95 but now with WIN98SE installed, no problems as such except that I want to upgrade my Modem 336-VSC ver 1.14 to the V.90 standard as some ISP phone numbers cannot be accessed & it says that Modem cannot comuunicate with this number (V90) I would like to know from where I can downlaod the upgrade to this modem. Compaq site cannot help & they diverted me to the site where I could not find anything useful. Many thanks - Regards Khushroo Dholoo

You need to buy a V.90 compliant Modem. It's not a driver fix.

Compaq Presario 4706 - Modem upgrade

Very few 33.6 modems have the ability to be flash upgraded to V90 operation.

This option was MUCH more common on retail modems than for OEM modems.

If Compaq does not offer an upgrade, you are basically out of luck.

Because of the age of your system, I recommend that you get a true hardware modem.
You can find external serial modems for under $25 at some web-tailer's.
