Compaq Server - Flashing Cursor

By mcgonegle ·
I have 7 Compaq Servers of various platforms running a website behind a Cisco local director.

The servers host static content as well as asp applications, using site server sp2 with NT service pack 5.

Occasionally one of the servers will die. When I attempt to reboot it, it displays the , "press f-10 for system partion utilities" and then hangs at a blinking cursor.

Tried accessing the partition using NTFS2DOS professional but it is unable to mount the partition.

The only thing I am able to do is rebuild the server.

What should I look at to determine what is crashing the servers?

At first galnce, this appears to be hard drive or drive controllers related. The system partition / EISA utilities are usually held in a separate partition on the drive. It sounds like the machine cannot access the drive at all. Has this happenedmore than once? Are you rebuilding onto the same drive that may have the problem? Can you see the partitions when you go to rebuild the machine? There should be Compaq diagnostics you run as bootable diskettes. The next time a server dies, boot those diskettes and see what information you can gather.

The problem ended up being not a issue with the raid controller or a hardware issue.

Tried using NTFS2DOS again and was able to see the drive volumes.

The problem was that there were certain views that were not created in oracle wich caused thousands of oracle trace files to fill the system32 directory.

After a few weeks the servers system32 directory would fill up and upon reboot all I would get is a flashing cursor.

Had the DBA create the views that were missing and Set up tasksto delete the files as they are generated.

Are you using SmartStart to build the servers??? Which RAID card are you using, if any??? Reseat the cache memory on the RAID card. What do you mean by "...server dies?" The hidden tools partition you are referring to is active only on F-10 after POST. If it is unavailable then the drive is missing from the RAID's BIOS. Do you see approx. 7 *'s when the RAID card initializes??? 7 *'s mean a successful RAID config load, meaning all drives configured are connected. Need more info...Make sure you run the System Erase between builds though...
