fail or remove

SMART is telling you that the drive will fail, but it hasn't failed yet. Since the drive hasn't yet failed, the RAID controller may still be using it.

First, go into the Array Configuration Utility and see what the status of the array is, Optimal or Degraded. If Optimal, read on.

If you do indeed have an extra drive in the system configured as a HOT SPARE, then by removing the failing drive, the RAID controller will automatically rebuild the array onto the hot spare.

You may also be able to go into the Array Configuration Utility and force the failing drive to a FAIL state, and the controller will rebuild onto the hot spare without removing the old drive. Once rebuilt and Optimal, you can remove the failed drive.

If your spare drive is not a HOT spare, but is sitting on the shelf, then simply remove the failing drive and replace it with the spare drive. Again, the RAID controller will rebuild the array onto the replacement drive.

This is RAID doing what it's designed to do.
