Hardware Failure

by TheChas In reply to Compaq wi fi not working- ...

Well, either the switch for the WiFi button has failed, or the WiFi adapter itself has failed.

There is an outside chance that a wrong driver update has corrupted the hardware layer.

Still, I would suspect the hardware.

A reputable laptop repair center should be able to verify and replace the wireless adapter if it has failed.

Another alternative would be to install a slot (PCMCIA or PCExpress) WiFi adapter. Just make sure to match the slot type of your computer.

Thanks! I was afraid of that since it worked perfectly for years and now it just suddenly stopped. Wanted a professional opinion though before hauling it off to the repair store! Appreciate your time!

Ok- now what is that please? I am not an IT person so would you mind telling me where this adapter is located? I know just enough about computers to be dangerous! But I can figure it out if someone will give me a little guidance.....

It's an external WiFi adapter. It plugs into one of your computer's USB port, but acts just like the dead WiFi built into your system.

Another option is a USB cellular modem, that connects to the cell phone network for Internet access. Obviously, this requires a service contract with a cellular service provice.

Yet another option is 'tethering' your cell phone. This uses your cell / smart phone's connection to connect your computer to the Internet. Again, cellular provider charges will apply.

Finally, you can always get an Ethernet cable and connect directly to your router / modem.

Well, it acts like your dead WiFi did BEFORE it died. :-)

Thanks for the explanation....will definitely explore that option now that you explained it to me. Ethernet works fine but it ties me to one room where the router is located and a few feet of wire....working all day is not ideal in this situation so really appreciate your help! Have a good one!

Does this unit actually have WiFi to begin with?

by OH Smeg In reply to Compaq wi fi not working- ...

Just because there is a Button there doesn't mean that this unit has a WiFi Device Fitted just that there is an option for it available.

Did this ever work previously?

If it didn't it's possible that there is no WiFi Device fitted.

Just a thoight

by bluntpencil In reply to Compaq wi fi not working- ...

Sorry. I meant thought.
If it is an old compaq, ie core duo or pen4,they all use one of a very few units.
They should be easily reached.
Open the panel underneath the laptop.
Please be brave and dont panic.
Small screw driver opens it and inside you will see the WiFi unit.
It is as easy as changing a RAM module.
You can swap it out dead easy if it is knackered for identical unit.
Two ariel wires pop off( a fool could do it, maybe even bogus laptop repair wallahs).
Just try reseating the original unit to see if it fires up.
If not get it off E-bay for around ??3.00
If it still doesnt work then try prayer.
But ?? 3.00 is not a lot of money compared to laptop repair joints.
Even legitimate ones.
WiFi units work hard for a living and get hot.
Tghings that get hot tend to die and it seems you are addicted to WiFi so I guess it has served you well.
Good Luck.
