Normally, I just look for an appropriate driver for the version of Windows.

The CD drive, and hard drive are NOT a problem.
All versions of Windows support “standard” IDE devices.
IDE devices are handled by the IDE bus driver for the chipset onthe motherboard.
SCSI devices may need drivers if the driver for the SCSI card does not take care of the requirements.

ASUS does have a W2K driver for the A7700 Deluxe, so you only need to make sure that it will work with your motherboard.

Also, verify that the motherboard manufacture has W2K drivers available.

You need to understand what exactly the HCL is. It is simply a list of all hardware which either Microsoft itself has tested, or for which the vendor has supplied drivers for testing.

Just because a particular piece of hardware isn’t on the HCL doesn’t mean it won’t work. However, if you have problems that appear to be hardware related, the first question Microsoft Tech Support will ask is whether your hardware IS on the HCL.

As The Chas suggests, if the vendor of a particular piece of software (that requires a driver) has an available driver for a given OS, chances are pretty good it will work.

If the piece of hardware doesn’t show up on the HCL, and the vendor doesn’t have Win2K-specific drivers available, then you are taking a chance it won’t work.
