I am not sure exactly how it works. But it uses algorithms to convert/compress a file from one format to another. For example a .wav file takes up about 10MB for every 1 Minute of music. When compressed to .mp3 it now takes up about 1MB per minute. There are so many different types of compression technology out there. Each one offers something different, and one might do one think better then the other. For data compression the popular is .zip .rar .ace and now days .7z. Movie formats they are called codec's which there are many of them. The more popular is DivX and OGG. For music it is MP3, WMA, and OGG. So what you are asking is a lot of information. My suggestion is to make google your best friend and do some searching for the above codec's and zipping utilitis. Hope that helps you on you quest to know more about data compression.

You have got to be kidding. There are college courses that cover that question.

Google gave me 10,300,000 hits on data compression alone.
