compressing files

How do I stop Windows XP from compressing old files in the background? When I do a disk cleanup it takes forever to finish because of the compressed stuff. I defrag with diskeeper pro every couple of days and I’m a tech who regularly goes through all my stuff/utilities so nothing on my hard drive needs to be compressed or considered old.
