Computer Account exists/doesn't exist

By ITAdmin-Dquick ·
I'm trying to name a computer BFA208. Through Server Manager I verified that the computer doesn't exists nor does the computer account exist. Wins, however indicated that there is an Active group named BFA208 at an address that is not active.

Any clues?

All client computer browser services are disabled so as not to generate too much traffic. They uses wins and wins uses DNS as backup.

Also, this is on a new machine. Tried renaming another machine and it too stated that the computer name was already in use.

Try Technet article Q242053 on cleaning out the WINS database. Then try to add the client.

A group in WINS is not a unique computer. It is either a domain, a workgroup, or a Service (like Proxy service). I am wondering if you have a computer somewhere with BFA208 listed as a workgroup, or you have a rogue LMHOSTS file somewhere.

I'm aware of this. if there was such a group listed, then it would show up in the browselist by either registration from the DHCP assigned address containing the Primary WINS Server or from broadcast announcements.
