Computer Constantly Freezes!

By ppoll ·
One of the computers in my network randomly freezes. It does this quite often, about evert 10-15 minutes. It seems to be a hardware failure, but I'm not sure what it could be. When it freezes, nothing works and my only option is to restart the computer. CTRL+ALT+DLT doesn't work, nor do the mouse or keyboard. Last time I used it, it froze in the middle of doing a scan disk (because it had just frozen before and not been shut down properly) and then when I tried to restart it, it wouldn't start. I heard the fan blowing, but that was it. Nothing else, it just stayed like that. Do you have any ideas what might be wrong with my computer.
Thanks for your help!

This may sound daft:
have you checked:
all the fans are working
there is nothing stuck in any of the fans (students fav trick is that)
the fan is secure on the processor
software - is it the same piece of software all the time?
Have you fresh air in a can, PCs don't like dust or anything else like that.

Hope you find the fault.
FRED

Sounds like a hardware fault, most likely an older AMD CPU which has been driven a litle hard either through excess heat or overclocking.
Also could be an overclocked CPU that has been okay for a while but has had enough.
Only other common fault Ican think of is defective RAM or insufficient hard disk space for the swap file (if it's running Windoze)..

Enjoy, there IS a world outside computers...

Check all connections to make sure they are making contact and secure.
Open the case and listen to see if the power supply, cpu fan,and hard drives are operating properly, make sure the power supply reset swith is not causing the problem
Check memory modules they may have creeped.
Take out the video card and boot the system,to see if everything boots up,then reinstall the card, this also applies to the memory sticks.

I have two initial guesses. My first one would be a disk issue. Start the disk in Safe Mode or MS dos mode and perform a scan disk. This will tell you if there are any issues with the disk.

My second guess is memory. It seems like you are having problems when exercising the machine too much. Scandisk running under windows can tax RAM.

If you have some memory that you could take from another machine and place it in the troubled machine, you may be able to see if RAM is indeed a problem.Good Luck

The p/s fan seems to be fine, is this comp on a clean line or are there other equipment on the same power line? Printers, fans, even radios can send noise through the line and corrupt the signals in the comp. Even a particularly noisey (electrical noise emissions) monitor in close proximity to the box may cause a prob., slim chance there though. Another problem could be a defective power supply in the computer itself, the 5v or onboard regulator for 2.8 or 3 volts may be at fault. If this is inyour skill set you could check these voltages when the problem occurs without rebooting. However check the things below first, I am sure its an overheat problem.
1) reseat all memory sticks
2)make damn sure the fan on the cpu is working, I would replace 'cause it may be intermittent, or remove the little circular label over the hub of that little itty bitty fan and place a drop of machine oil in it.
3)check that the heat sink on cpu is secure, and firmly latched in place.
4)remove heat sinkand place a film of hi temp silicone grease or "heat sink grease" on the top of the cpu then replace cpu heat sink with fan attached, obviously this is only if your cpu is socketed and not a slot type, you did not say.

one other thing, when the problem occurs remove the cover without turning it off or immediately after turning it of and place a finger on the base of the heatsink where it meets the cpu, if this is unbearably hot there is your answer. it will be very warm, maybe hot but it should be tolerable to your touch and not cause you to have to withdraw your hand 'cause of the temp!
