Locked

Computer Freeze

By james_rocha ·
I just bought a Systemax 1.0Ghz AMD Athlon Computer system through AS SEEN ON TV PC and it freezes up quite a bit. It doesn't do it during any particular program but does seem to do it most often while I am on the internet. When it freezes I can't do anything except hit reset. Any suggestion to fix or even find problem?

Computer Freeze

You dont mention which operating system you are using or for that matter which browser.
If you are using IE 5.5 under Win98 or even ME then I suspect that is what is causing the problem. There is also another possible cause. If you have a software modem (SM56PCI) for example where the CPU takes over all data functions as opposed to the modem chipset doing it itself, then this has been known to cause problems. (Trust me, I suffered the same fate on another machine of mine!!!) The only other possible cause is that your CPU may be overheating causing the system to hang. If the symptoms only occur after the machine has been switched on for a period of 1/2 hour - 1hour then this is likely to be the cause of all your woes. Try running the machine for about 2 hours with a resource hungry application and see when it hangs. If you still experience errors after this then I suggest returning the machine to the manufacturer.

I have IE 4.0 with Windows Me. I have Lucent MDP7800 modem. I don't think it is an over heat problrm because I have had it freeze on startup and shutdown before.

To further the good suggestions above, I had a client machine that displayed the same concerns that you mentioned. After much hair pulling it turned out that the sound events that IE uses during browsing caused the soundcard to lock the machine. Replacing the jippo clone pci soundcard solved the concern. Suggest removing the soundcard and running without it for awhile and see if your concern is related to it.

PC's should never hang, lost mouse, ctl-alt-del fails.
If this happens using a particular appication (Like TV or Modem then it will be
The hardware failing and send it back.
If it fails generaly, spasmodically then it will be a "Memory" problem.the memory 64, 128 etc is either not soundly plugged, it is incompatable, or it is faulty, again replace the memory (RAM)

I have encountered all of the above and resolved them all as above.

Answers no, suggestions yes. Where you say it happens mostly when you are browsing the net imply's that it happens in other programs as well, first what ever OS you are running make sure you have all the updates and patches installed, it being a newPC and all I'm going to go out on a limb and say the CPU fan is not yet clogged with dust.

As far as I know I have gotten all the updates. No the fan is not clogged. Actually the computer has been on continous for 2 days now and hasn't crash yet.
