Computer Freeze

By dlcompu ·
When in window system would lock up for no apparent reason and would have to restart computer. Most of the time it would lock up even before even starting windows. Other times it gets to the windows log on screen and then locks up. If you where successful getting into Windows and started working say in Word it would lock up. Don't know if is a software or hardware problem. Running P4, 512 ram, WinXP Pro service pack 3. Any suggestions?

Here you go

Go here:

Download and burn to cd. Boot with it, go to the motherboard options, then run MemTest 86+. It sounds to me like you may have a RAM problem, or a bad motherbaord. You can take the side of the case off, look at the caps on the board and see if any of them are bubbled and/or popped open and leaking. That would be where I would start since it is happening while booting into windows and also while working in windows. You may also want to go to the hard drive diagnostics part of the ultimate boot cd and run SeaTools or the Hitachi Drive fitness Test....check the hard drive and see what comes of it.
