Computer Freezes at logon screen.

By neek ·
Just recently on one of my XP machines, once it gets to the logon screen, if i touch any key on my keyboard, my computer will in a way freeze up. I say this becauase i can move the mouse before i touch the keyboard, but once i touch a button on the keyboard i cant move the mouse or type anything, although if i press the power button on the tower, the box that says "windows is now shutting down" will pop up, so its not TOTALLY freezing up, i just cant move the mouse or type. Any ideas?

some ideas:
1) does it do this in safemode (and i'd be interested to know if you have normal keyboard operation during boot)
2)what if you unplug mouse and boot (only if comfortable with keyboard navigation)
3)what if you try another keyboard/mouse

1) i do get normal operation during the post
2) i will try to unplug the mouse and use only keyboard
3)i have used another keyboard (uncluding a different connection type ps2 and usb)

My best guess is that the keyboard has a problem, or the driver for the keyboard has a problem.
Try another keyboard, if it does not fix it, (if available) try a USB keyboard, and wait a couple of minutes for the driver to load.

let your system boot up normally, then from the command prompt set up file checker.... sfc/scannow should do it. If there are corrupt files in the OS then it may be having boot problems.
