Computer has power but will not actually start.

By jkreisel ·
I have a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard. All works fine. Had an nvidia geforce 8800 ultra card. Replaced the nvidia with an ati radeon hd 6870. Plugged everything back in and a few leds on the motherboard light up but it will not boot. Unplg the power to the graphics card and the systems starts to boot properly. Plug one plug into graphics card and it still tries to boot. Replaced my 500 watt power supply with a 650 watt. Same problem. I put an older nvidia fx560 card in and the system works fine. Is the card bad?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe bad, or not compatible for some reason.

Are there any BIOS settings you should change in advance of installing the card?

Sounds as if you have a Incompatible Video Card here

I'm not really sure why this is happening now but these Gigabyte X58 Chip Set Boards can be very finicky when it comes to Video Chip Sets. Even then I've had the same Chip Set from Different Video Card Makers with one not working and another from a different maker but the same Chip Set type work.

With the 58 Chip Sets I tend to only use High End ATI Video Cards myself and as yet I have not experienced any problems.

Installed the card on another computer with an ASUS motherboard.

My other computer with an ASUS board has the same issue, so I think it is the card.
I will see if I can get the card replaced.
Thank you
