You may try reinstalling the motherboard drivers.

I have also seen compatabilty issues that appear under XP that were not issues under previous versions. This would include master/slave configuration with any other device on the secondary IDE port. Yes, I have seen this happen. It seems that some drives take offense about being slaved behind another drive. " How DARE you! " seems to be their attitude.

I suspect the CD Rom drive has a bad controller on it. CD Rom drives are inexpensive and would be worth the effort to see if a new CD Rom drive will solve the problem for you.

I hope this helps you.

A feature of Windows XP is when an error is detected at startup or hardware conflict the system will reboot until hardware problem is resolved.

Boot computer into safe mode, open Device manager, highlight CD Rom check first if their is a yellow exclamation mark (which denotes problem),also check the controllers to make sure they are installed.

You will need to load device drivers for the cd rom to get the system up and running, you could trouble shoot this by Uninstalling the cd rom and rebooting computer.

Stop WinXp from automatically restarting after errors. Right click My Computer - Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings. Under System Failure uncheck "Automatically Restart". Restart your system and insert a CD. Instead of restarting XP should give you a blue screen. Report back with the error code it generates. reboot the system and right click My Computer - Manage - Event Viewer. Look at Application & System and see what the last warnings & errors are listed. Post that to a comment back here also.
