Computer keeps sutting down

By thegv ·
Don't know what to do at this point. Computer shuts down after in Windows 98 for a few minutes. It does not do a scan when you go back on again, it is like it is a planned shutdown. I have checked the memory and power supply and no problems. used microscope to check the board and cpu and no problems.
Can run in the bios and dos for an extended period of time but as soon as you start windows, it will run for maybe 3 or 4 minutes tops and then shut down.
Any Ideas of what to try or deos someone KNOW what to do?

Try the power management applet in control panel. Sometimes the harddrive is configured to power down. Hope that helps..

If there are no power-management features activated, I'd format the HD and reinstall W98. This alone should take care of your problem. Make sure you have the latest drivers handy before your format - no need to use the old ones if new ones are available and you're going thru the trouble of formatting.

Good luck.

Well, normally at this point I would suggest the computer has a chance of having an overhearting problem but two things deviate from that, the fact that you claim W98 shuts down in a proper matter and that DOS runs fine. So in turn, I will turn to the next su-guess-tion, have you ran a virus scan on your hard drive? I mean, that's pretty much it - the OS, overheating or virus.

Good luck.

Have you tried different RAM? My brother had the same thing happen to him (I don't know about the DOS and command line, he didn't mention that). He had just added RAM when it started. The system would do a restart out of the blue. Worth a shot...

I would go with Answer 3, have a system that does the same thing, except that it did not shutdown Win98, simply goes off. The root of this problem is overheating. CPU or processor does that when it is overheated. A check indicate that the cpu fan isworking fine but the interior of the PC is extremely warm. It's like being in a furnace room. The system PSU exhaust fan was not working, the hot air was not drawn out and the ventilation for the system was bad.
