Computer locking up!

By sonofjonah ·
I have a ACER 233mhz computer with WIN98. I am having many problems with it locking up. I try to play a game and it locks up when I try to 'save'. I tried to use the 'find files' and it locks up. CRT+ALT+DEL does not open any screen and I have to just shut it off. I am trying to reload WIN98 over the existing WIN98 and start over but it locks up trying that. I have gone and stopped all functions except 'EXPLORER' and 'SYSTRAY' and then tried to download WIN98 and it still locks up, sometimes sooner than others. What can I do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

Trying to reload Win 98 over the existing on that has problems is not a good idea.

If you can to save all the other data on the disk you can do this.

Create a Win 98 Startup Diskette (Just in case something goes wrong you will be able to reload win 98 from the CD with this)

Boot windows
Using Windows explorer go into the windows folder and copy the DESKTOP folder to another folder on the C drive (No inside the windows folder)
Now Delete everything in the desktop folder even any hidden files.
(This is so the re-install of windows can go back into the same windows folder)

Boot to the COMMAND PROMPT

Then perform these commands

cd \windows
del *.*
(answer Y to All)
attrib -r -s -h *.*
del *.*
(answer Y to All)
del system
(answer Y to All)
rmdir desktop
(to reload windows into the orginal windows folder the desktop folder can not exist)
cd \windows\options\cabs
setup

(This setup should start the Win 98 install process and create a new registry and reloadall the system files back to the orginal win 9

I have done this multiple times on computers that keep freezing and nothing else fixes it.

If the computer does not freeze when you are executing certain programs, that is just locks up at random, I would guess it would be a heat issue. Is your fan big enough for your processor? Do you have a heatsink? Try adding one if you don't. Try a bigger fan. Good Luck. JAKE

Without knowing more about your system such as the amount of RAM etc. it is hard to tell. I would start with a scandisk and then a defrag. If these don't work i would say your system is in need of some system upgrades.

I agree with answer #2 that excessive CPU heat could be the problem with ramdom lockups. Check the CPU fan to see if it is running fast enough - or running at all. If not sure of the speed, replace it - $5 buys a new one. That 233MHz system is far from new and CPU fans frequently are the first things to fail.

adjust your 233 mhz to 200 you can refer to your motherboard where to locate this jumper in your motherboard. it will be slower however, but free of any lockups or error messages.
