Computer locking up each time I boot

By gkg44 ·
Sometimes windows boots completely sometimes it locks up on the screen that says something about your settings. One of the first screens (xp).
This is much worse since I installed Norton security suite. I booted it last night and ran a virus scan, got up this am to see my screen saver running but no response to attempts to awaken the computer. This is now each time I reboot. Any thoughts?

Registry Integrity, virus, malware, drivers?

by oldbaritone In reply to Computer locking up each ...

Have you scanned for pre-existing conditions including registry integrity, virus and malware scans?

Do you have the same issue when you boot in Safe Mode?

Have you checked manufacturer's websites for updated drivers for all components of your system?

"the screen that says something about your settings" doesn't help much.

Thank you for the response

When you boot in XP and click on yourself as the user, it completes the boot of windows and it gives a message about loading your settings. It appears every time you start up. It's not an error message. I was just indicating that the computer sometimes locks up midway through startup.

'something about your settings'

Perhaps if you posted that something you would get more help.

Would you go to the doctor and just say - I'm in some kind of pain and it got worse after I bought a new car yesterday and expect a diagnosis based purely on that?
