computer locks up

By hrpeople ·
After changing harddrives and reloading windows my computer still continues to lock up on a regular basis. A few other strange things are happening, examples= When loading aol 7.0 or 8.0 it says that its installing 6.0 but locks up at the 97% done everytime. I have a 96 meg memory chip but it reads out at 88 meg during the power on sequence and in the device manager window. The computer can work fine for a little while then just locks up for no paticluar reason. I have to cold boot after it locks up.

Do you have on-board video. If you do your machine is using 8 megs of system memory for video. What kind of error messages do you receive? Are the cpu fan and other fans working properly.

Also, I've never heard of a 96 meg chip. Are you sure you don't have a 64 meg and a 32 meg set of chips? You might try running each of those chips alone and see if the problem disappears.

I have to agree with saihib. I think that if you take the 32 mb chip or the 2 16 chips out you might solve your problem. I definately think it is there that your problem lies. Best bet is if you can get other memory to put in it to test the correct reading. The would tell if the memory is bad. Hope this helps

Check that your cpu fan heatsink is still working? Your CPU might overheat and causes the lockups.

Another reason might be bad ram module. I would take out the ram and test it on a seperate machine one by one..
