Computer Reboots While Trying to Install Windows

By eraser3498 ·
Recently I've came across a blaffing problem while trying to install any version of windows. Just as the setup process is about to begin the computer will power itself down and stop working. I've tried every possible combination of Memory, CPU and motherboard, but nothing seems to help. I've also replaced the power supply, tested the hard drive for erros but it came back clean. My system is as follows: Athlon Xp 2200, MSI KV3M-V motherboard. PC2100 512MB of memory, Western Digital 40GB Hard drive and a Geforce 3 128MB 4X video card. Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

At exactly what point in setup does error occur? In other words, how far do you get before shutdown?

I want to be sure what you mean by "setup process is about to begin."

If it's when file copying starts, RAM is likely culprit.

Is BIOS display OK? Booting from CD OK?

Shuts down at first graphics screen? If so may be video adapter.

As other poster said RAM is a likely suspect, get DocMem from simmtester at:

Another problems could be insufficient power supply, overheating video card (fans all good?), bad motherboard. Try formatting and starting over if you think it was due to a bad install to begin with.
The Chas will be along with more soon.
