knowing what the error message is

by PurpleSkys In reply to Computer Shutdown Hangs

would be helpful. See if you can get it to do it again and then post back to us what it is. Mine will sometimes hang on shutting down Outlook before logging off but I think it's because I have way too much stuff in my Outlook.

svchost

by seanferd In reply to Computer Shutdown Hangs

That hosts all the services running on the computer. It could be any service running under that instance of svchost.

Better to check your event logs and see if there is an error or warning condition shown at the time of shutdown.

You can also run this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645
before you shut down, and have it log the shutdown.

You may be able to determine which svchost process and service are involved by using this extended version of the task manager http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

Depending on what service/application it is, you may be able to set the service to manual or diabled if its a non essential services, , and uninstall or disable the offending application, or look for a patch for it.

Check your event log

by markp24 In reply to Computer Shutdown Hangs

Hi,

check you event log, usually under the system or application log it will have recorded the error message that poped up (check for application popup when looking thru the logs) then you can provide us with the error message.
