Computer shuts down without warning

By total geek ·
The computer shuts down without any warning. The user was in an application at home which we can also use at work when the machine just turned itself off. Does anyone have any ideas? It took three goes to get it to stay on long enough to use it. Could it be the power supply. The pc is running Windows ME with a PIII 850.

Thanks

Mil

First lets isolate the proble:
1: Does this happen with just one particular application or with any application, if yes then try reinstalling App.

2: Does the system give you a hard time turning on, ie. does it sometimes take 3 or 4 times of pressing the pwer button on the system befor it actually starts up, this is a good indication of power supply going,

3: Can you hear if the CPU fan in the tower is dieing out or making new, strange sounds at system startup or while using the system, may indicate that the system is over heating. This may also be the issue even if the CPU fan is ok if the room that the system is in is very hot.

personally, it sounds similar to a dieing power supply, if proven, purchase a new tower with a powersupply, ussually the tower is an additional $10 or so from the power supply price.

write me if this does or does not help,
micheal@techemail.com good luck to ya,

Hello Friend,

This problem occure when your PCs start heating up too much. this may be your processor fan is not working problem or the othe friend is right it may be your application problem. One thing more is your system is connected with UPS, if yes then check it's battries.

The most common reason that PC's shut down by themselves is due to the processor overheating.
Check
1) Fan operation
2) Dust or other debris clogging the vents on the case.
3) Operating Environment- is it too hot in the room where the comuter isused.
System on ambient temperatures should be 60-90 degrees f. System off temp 50-110 degrees f.
Also, check power supply cooling fan operation.*
