Computer Spontaneously Reboots Itself

By KbKmTmTw ·
I have an older computer running Windows 98 that spontaneously reboots itself. I just recently fdisked the hddrive and reinstalled Windows 98 and other programs; also, did a complete virus scan of the hddrive. I was thinking it could possibly be mypower supply but I don't know how to test that...

...OR if there is any other ideas of what could be causing this to happen and ways to fix it, I'd really appreciate it!!!

Thanks!

It could be overheating. Check all your fans (power supply, CPU, etc) to make sure they're working.

Try running the computer with the case off. If the spontaneous rebooting stops, then it's overheating.

Could also be a bad power supply. If you a spare one handy (borrow one from another machine or a friend maybe), switch them out and see if the problem continues.

Check for wake-on events being enabled in the power management section of BIOS settings.

Next, let the PC set for a while with the front panel power switch disconnected from the motherboard.
If the PC does not start up, then the switch is going bad.
If it still starts up, I suspect the power control circuitry on the motherboard.
I have seen a rash of motherboards with this problem lately. I suspect that ESD (static) is traveling from the front panel button, down the switch wires to the motherboard.

i will bet that it is the power supply i have seen this hundreds of times. try swapping it with another or if you have a multi meter boot the system up and test the voltage until it reboots if it fluctuates then its bad it should not fluctuate more then .2 volts
