It may be that the Motherboard or BIOS is not compatable with W2k. It also may be a corrupt system file. i had the same problem with windows ME and it turned out to be a bad install. hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!

I bought a UMAX system a few years back. Had the same problem. Besides that, the screen saver (fishes swimming in the ocean) kept making me think my drains were overflowing till I traced the glub, glub to the computer room).

It turned out that the system had been enabled for wakup on phone ring (and a couple of other things). As I remember this was not just bios but ... Been a while. May have been FAX software that was in Win 98. Might try pulling the phone line, net card, etc. one at a time to see if you can isolate.

Hi,
Assuming (love that word) that the PC is actually shutdown and you don't have a faulty PSU or M/Board. The only thing that can turn a PC ON is the Bios. When you turn a PC off, you don't. The on/off switch just kills most of the power lines, a small part of the M/B is still alive looking for a signal to turn on all the power again. The ones to look for are wake on modem, wake on LAN, and wake on time. I've seen with serial mice and rubbish in the bios, the wake on mouse (thinks its a modem). Lastly, once I had a system where on and off had got mixed up. Bios thought it was on when it was off and vice versa, but shutdown didn't work in that case and if you turned the machine on yourself, you had to press the on/off key for over a couple of seconds.
Hope that helps
Spryce

We had a machine doing this where I work. I actually was standing there after everyone else had left for the day and the machine started booting up. We found that the network card had a wake on lan capability with it (3com 3c905c)It had a small cable running from the card into the motherboard, we pulled the cable and the ghosts went with it. Hope this helps!
