Computer turns on then shuts down

By nathan0379 ·
My computer starts up using Windows XP Pro, then it shuts down right away. It repeats this process over and over again. Sometimes it boots, and I'm able to keep it on for a long time, but every once in a while it does this again.

Please watch the PC boot, and pay close attention to where it re-boots.

Also, does it re-start at the same point each time?

Then, add a comment to your question with the additional information and as many details as you can provide as to what hardware is in the PC.

You have been infected by one of the recent viruses and more than likely its the W32.Blaster.Worm. This is part of what the buggie does. It can be fixed.

Symantec, McAfee and the others have info on removing the virus. There's a security patch from Microsoft that must be applied for the OS.

This intermittent boot problem can have several causes.
The most likely; it is a warning that the power supply is going bad.
The next is; a corrupt file in XP. (I have forgotten which one.)
The virus is usually more consistant.
You can reload XP, but I usually start by checking the power supply.
Can you read the voltages in your BIOS?
Regards, Chris

What you describe happened to me when I tried to install Veritas' DLA. I was able to start the computer in safe mode and uninstall DLA, but I don't remember the details.

However, since you say it sometimes works OK for a while, I'll have to go along with the bad power supply theory or maybe an intermittent connection somewhere in the computer. Good luck finding something like that!

Try downloading and burning a copy of Knoppix (version of Linux which runs from the CD) to see if it will run without problems, just as a troubleshooting aid.

It could be that the capacitors on the motherboard. I have had 3 IBM unit this year that had to be replaced at work.
Look at the capacitors, if they are flat on top, they are good. If they are raised they are bad.

Good Luck
