Computer w/ win98 loses connection to ne

by rainnie1 . Updated 24 years, 9 months ago

Hello:
On our Win 2000 domain, I have a Compaq Celerom 300 with a Dlink 550 network card running the first edition of Win98 with critical updates installed. From two different network drops using different network cable and user accounts, the workstation loses its’ connection to the network overnight. Both user accounts are members of the domain users group. Error messages are usually like resource not found when a network resource is clicked on or it can’t find the Microsoft Mail Post Office that is on the domain controller. The worst symptom is an inability to print to a printer connected to a Win NT station. A reboot takes care of the problem, but the users are helicopter pilots who need a reliable workstation that stays on the networkfor Internet access and printing.

I have tried a different card, different user account, and different network drop.

No other workstations have shown these symtoms and the problem one only does so occasionally, once every 3 to 4 weeks, although now it happens more frequently after sitting with no activity for a night or weekend.

I have turned off all power saving features, and scheduled jobs to run overnight (except a required backup job). I ahve also uninstalled all network software when I installed the new card in a different PCMCIA slot.

Other things I will do are use a USB card and update the BIOS and OS to Win 98 SE.

One new situation that ahappened this morning due to the recreation of a share on the problem workstation. The backup server was mapped to a non – existant share and it paused trying to conect to the problem workstation. The problem workstation would get a “No Permission to Access Server” message when accessing the server even on reboot.
