Computer will not shutdown

By SysEngineer ·
A friend has a Windows 98 machine that when trying to shut it down, it loops back into a re-boot. The only way to turn the computer off is to hold in the power button for approx. 10 seconds. I thought about trying to upgrade the BIOS, but there is risk associated with that. Any other suggestions??

Holdding down the power button is the correct procedure.

I am aware that you can hold down the power button to shutdown the computer. I would like the PC to be able to shutdown without this, by the typical Start > Shutdown procedure. I already though about flashing the BIOS, what I was looking for was an alternative.

There are a number of reasons for the inability to do the normal shutdown sequence - the BIOS addresses the hardware side, but it could possibly be a software issue as well.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/q260067/Default.asp addresses an issue where someone has a large number of mapped drives and this can cause a shutdown fault in the right circumstances. I have also seen problems with apps like anti-virus software that can hang the system at shutdown and send it into a startup loop.

Also take a look at:

And entawanabi, don't contribute if you don't know what you are saying. Using the power button is a last resort, not the standard way of doing a shutdown, unless you are going back to DOS. If you do it often enough you may cause OS corruption.

Hope that helps.

James
