Computer With 2 Names?!

By KrisL187 ·
I have 2 computers. Let's call them CompA and CompB. I am having a problem with CompA as I have found that it seems to have two names.

Both CompA and CompB show their proper names when you look in My Computer, or if you check the registry key. However, when I ping the systems, something isn't right.

If I ping them by their names (ie: CompA.domain) the IP shows as it is supposed to.

If I ping (using ping -a) by IP, BOTH computers show the name of CompB!

If I ping CompA's IP, it should return CompA's name, not CompB's name.

How can I fix this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help I get!! 8-)

DNS

by Jellimonsta In reply to Computer With 2 Names?!

This is not an issue with your computer name, but with DNS. Check your DNS/ router settings. Also, verify there are no hosts file entries on either PC with a static name to IP resolution.
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc there is a file named 'hosts'. Open with notepad and ensure localhost 127.0.0.1 is the only entry if there is no need for other static entries.

Edit: Ensure that if edited the hosts file is saved without an extension (i.e. .txt).

DNS Problem

You'll most likely have two entries for CompB in there, one with the IP address for CompA and one with the IP address for CompB.

I had this exact same problem last weekend! :-)
