Computer Won’t Drfrag (Win98 SE)

The last time I Defraged the computer was about 5 mos ago. One tech head friend says I need to replace the motherboard or hard drive. Another says I have a virus. Scanned the computer with a new virus software but nothing came up. Every time I try to Defrag, the status bar remains at 0% even after an hour has pass!
